Hello and welcome!
I should be writing this with a glass of bubbles in hand, as it feels like a huge milestone to be writing the first blog post on the new website for Offspring Photography – my baby and family photography business. Instead, I’m sat on the sofa watching an episode of In the Night Garden with my husband and son nestled next to me. My son has his bedtime bottle of milk. He shows far more enjoyment drinking it than I imagine I would from drinking Champagne… or, then again!
As a trained journalist, I just love telling people’s stories and spent years communicating through words, but I have forever admired the visual power of photography too. My passion for photography really grew when my husband and I went travelling. We spent a few years after we married taking long holidays that allowed us to explore some exciting places including Moscow, Mongolia and Beijing along the Trans Siberian Railway and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to Buenos Aires and El Calafate in Argentina. I was five months pregnant when we travelled north from Oslo into the Arctic Circle to Kirkenes hunting the Northern Lights. I think I may have annoyed my husband at times as I, more often than not, had my eye pressed to the view finder and my finger on the shutter button, but my photos are now compiled in coffee table books and provide us with a wonderful record for us to reminisce over.
When my little boy was born, I picked up my camera and I have not put it down since. I’ve discovered quickly that I find babies captivating. Not only their features – tiny hands and toes, squidgy cheeks and soft skin – but the way they are alien to everything and everyone around them. Almost everything has to be learnt or discovered for the very first time. Thousands of new experiences, sights, textures, smells await them and as parents we have the joy of introducing them all.
Like my time travelling, I was on a journey of discovery and wanted to capture every aspect of our new life as a family. This meant improving my photography skills to allow me to get the best capture of each key moment and stage. I enrolled on courses, I read blog after blog, watched tutorial after tutorial and practised – my friends and family became my test cases and I just loved it! Having a baby had not only brought a beautiful new person into our lives, but it had also made me realise that photography could become a much bigger part of my everyday and so Offspring Photography was born.
I think the beauty of baby and newborn photography is how natural it is. There’s no posing – I have to work hard to get a connection with me (the photographer) and the camera. The unpredictability of babies and children is also a challenge. At each session I aim to get “THE” shot – the moment where I see a great expression, or a momentary connection between people or the highlight of an action or activity.
I love to combine posed portraits with the parents and other family members, with lifestyle photos that capture everyday activities – meal time, play time, story time and sleep time. With Offspring Photography’s lifestyle shoots I work with natural light (no use of harsh studio lights or flash) in the comfort of your own home where all that surrounds you is familiar. That way, I can capture natural portraits of your family rather than be constrained by a white background and lights in a studio. We are also lucky to have a wealth of locations here in Warwickshire that can provide perfect backdrops – gardens, parks, woodlands that are enhanced with spring flowers, autumn leaves or the hazy summer sun. They all add their own magic to photographs and can help to create a nostalgic record of the place where your little one grew up that they can look back on in years to come.
The saying ‘a picture speaks a 1,000 words’ is befitting when you consider that a newborn baby is yet to have the ability to communicate through words. Through Offspring Photography I hope to get “THE” shot that tells the beautiful story of your baby and family.
